Sleep Mask Tutorial & Free Pattern

Sleep masks are one of those things that are so simple, yet wonderfully genius…they block out light that might otherwise cause you to have trouble sleeping (and you know I’ve been a big proponent of rest lately!)

Bonus? They’re easy (and inexpensive!) to make. Plus, they’re a great project for using up scrap fabrics and materials. What’s not to love? Make several for yourself, and then make some as gifts!

I’m including a free pdf pattern so you can make your own. You can download it here:

Materials Needed

  • Fabric for the outer side (the “pretty” fabric you’ll see)
  • Fabric for the inner side (something soft as it will rest against your face)
  • Quilt batting
  • Elastic or stretch trim
  • Thread
  • Pattern

Instructions

You can watch the full tutorial here:

(Written instructions):
First, cut out your pattern, then use it to cut out one piece for the outside, one for the inside, and one piece of quilt batting.

Then, cut a length of stretch trim; I cut a piece 10″ long, but depending on the stretchiness of your trim and the size of your head, you may need to cut it shorter or longer.

Tack the trim to the sides; then, place the inner fabric on top of the outer fabric, with right sides together. Place the batting piece on top of that. Pin together and stitch around using a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving an opening at the top about 2.5″ to 3″ wide.

Turn your mask right side out; press around the edges, and press the raw edges of the opening at the top inward. Top stitch around the mask (tip: use a walking foot for smoother sewing!)

If you try this project, I’d love to see the finished result! Tag me on twitter or instagram @moth_and_rust.
